CREST, HOSAKOTE

Situated 35 km to the northeast of Bangalore, about 5 km off the Old Madras Road near Hosakote town, is the sprawling 40-acre campus of the Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. The campus houses the control room for the remote facilities of Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle, as well as facilities for fundamental research in Physics and Astrophysics, instrumentation development, for organizing schools, workshops and symposia, etc.

The activities at the CREST campus began with a temporary project building in the year 1997. The remote control room, computer room, and hostel blocks are now ready and functioning. The 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) is being utilized by astronomers from the control room using satellite communication link since May 2003. Construction of M.G.K. Menon Space Sciences Laboratory is planned as a part of a new wing of the building. Laboratories for optical and infrared astronomy, libary and canteen blocks will be built in future.
